Very simply, when a cigarette is dropped in, it is starved of oxygen and extinguished, usually within a minute. That's why we say "Don't stub it out, just drop it in". Opening the lid after the butt has been dropped in will feed it with oxygen and delay the extinguishing process.

CARE, MAINTENANCE & SAFETY: Empty your Bobken regularly. Do not allow it to overflow. DO NOT insert anything through the hole except cigarette butts. The Bobken is dishwasher safe. DO NOT leave burning cigarettes unattended. For maximum longevity, keep the ash end of cigarette off the lid surface. We've seen many Bobken's still in use for over ten years!
